Replica Rolex GMT-Master II Rootbeer, for many people, Root Beer is a kind of soft drink – usually enjoyed with a delightful scope of ice-cream in the form of Root Beer Float. For watch aficionados – or specifically, Rolex collectors – the term “Root Beer” connotes an entirely different interpretation altogether. When it comes to the GMT-Master collection, that is where the creative juices really start to flow. The GMT-Master (and subsequently the GMT-Master II) with the red and blue bezel insert is known as “Pepsi”, and the other with the red and black bezel insert was termed as “Coke”. Of course, not forgetting the star of today’s article – the “Root Beer’, which is identified by its black and gold bezel insert. It is also interesting to note that the running theme for these nicknames were based on soft drinks. The Rolex GMT-Master was initially created for Pan AM, and issued by them to their crews on long-haul flights. The key feature of the watch was that it allowed the wearer to simultaneously reference two different time zones. The original GMT-Master watch has a fourth hand (24-hour display) that displays the same time zone as the standard 12 hour hand. The GMT hand enables the wearer to set the watch to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or any other time zone for the main time view, then set the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel to a second time zone. The GMT name is derived from Greenwich Mean Time.In 1983, the Rolex GMT-Master II 16760 was released. Despite this new model, production of the original GMT-Master (with modifications) continued until the late 1990s. On the outside, the two versions of the GMT-Master look nearly identical. However, their biggest differences lie within. The GMT-Master II utilizes a movement that has the additional capability of an independently adjustable hour hand, which can be adjusted in one-hour increments without stopping the second hand or disturbing the minute hand or 24-hour hand. This version of the GMT-Master II also features a rotatable bezel, allowing the wearer to easily reference a third time zone. The original GMT-Master II is fondly nicknamed the “Fat Lady” as its case is thicker than the original GMT-Master.
In 2013, Rolex broke new ground when it introduced its first single-piece, two-colour ceramic bezel insert – blue on one half and black on the other – on an Oystersteel version of the Rolex GMT-Master II clone. In 2014, Rolex unveiled a red and blue Cerachrom bezel insert – the GMT-Master’s original colour. The GMT-Master II in 18 kt white gold presented in 2019 features a meteorite dial. In 2022, Rolex introduced an original version of the GMT-Master II with the crown on the left side of the case and a green and black bezel insert. This new edition of the watch echoes the GMT-Master created in 1955 which accompanied the advent of commercial flight. Adjustments were needed to move the winding crown to the left side of the watch case and the date aperture to 9 o’clock. Changes were also required to the process of measuring the precision of the watch during final testing. Rolex introduces two new versions of the GMT-Master II that signal the return of 18 kt yellow gold to the model in 2023. The first is a yellow Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and yellow gold), whereas the second is crafted entirely in this precious metal.
